چکیده

A growing stream of environmental legislation enforces collection and recycling of used electrical and electronics products. Based on our experiences with producers coping with e-waste legislation, we find there is a strong need for research on the implications of such legislation from an operations perspective. In particular, as a discipline at the interface of systems design and economic modeling, operations focused research can be extremely useful in identifying appropriate e-waste take-back implementations for different business environments and how producers should react to those.

PCRR E-waste Stream Analysis

The problem addressed in this paper is that the incoming stream of “feedstock” from product take-back systems is known to be widely variable, but the type and extent of that variability have not been well defined. This paper presents an analysis of data from an incoming e-waste stream for a computer refurbisher, and analyzes the type and degree of variability. The implications for design for su...

Agent Based Simulation Optimization of Waste Electrical and Electronics Equipment Recovery

The profitability of electronic waste (e-waste) recovery operations is quite challenging due to various sources of uncertainties in the quantity, quality, and timing of returns originating from consumers’ behavior. The cloud-based remanufacturing concept, data collection, and information tracking technologies seem promising solutions toward the proper collection and recovery of product life cyc...

Extended Producer Responsibility for E-Waste: Individual or Collective Producer Responsibility? (Forthcoming in Production and Operations Management)

We investigate the implications of collective and individual producer responsibility (CPR and IPR, respectively) models of product take-back laws for e-waste on manufacturers’ design for product recovery (DfR) choices and profits, and on consumer surplus in the presence of product competition. We show that IPR offers superior DfR incentives as compared to CPR, and provides a level competitive g...

Take-Back Legislation and its Impact on Closed-Loop Supply Chains

In this article, we introduce and exemplify existing legislation that regulates the end-of-life processing of used products and discuss potential implications of such legislation on closed-loop supply chains (CLSCs). Using a generic CLSC model, we provide our perspective on how such legislation in general influences different stakeholders in closed-loop supply chains.
